The Askew View

Hi, I’m Arri Phillips! I’m a university student currently studying Politics, Philosophy & Economics and Science and I am involved with youth politics in Canberra. I have always had a passion for writing so this website and these articles are a huge ongoing project for me that I hope can project my passions, opinions, and research to the world! The name “Askew View” comes from the surname of the Irish side of my family, Askew. My core values lie in listening to our youth and prioritising transparancy.

I grew up in Fremantle, Western Australia and have visited and lived all around the world, eventually settling in Canberra for college (Year 11 and 12 for non-ACT people) and for my dad’s career as a current Rear Admiral in the Royal Australian Navy and the Head of Nuclear Submarines. My family comes from diverse backgrounds including Irish, Italian, and other European nationalities. I am a member of the LGBT+ community and a strong advocate for our rights and for mental health in youth and better education surrounding politics and relationships. I started uni at the Australian National University, but for social and personal reasons I decided to transfer to University of Canberra where I studied Politics & International Relations and Journalism, and then I decided to transfer back to ANU. Some of my hobbies include writing (duh), running, cooking, and the gym, and my interests include politics, history (particularly ancient history), palaeontology (huge dinosaur nerd!) and pop-culture.

The articles I write are not peer-reviewed or for any academic purposes, they are simply my own personal projects.

I Don’t Want a Home

Arri Phillips-Askew17 February, 2026 There is a common misconception that healing is a homecoming. A return to a version of ourselves that existed before the world left its marks. But lately, I have found that the most profound peace doesn’t come from finding a place to stay, but from finding the strength to leave. For…

Australia’s political landscape after the bondi terrorist attack

Arri Phillips,7 January, 2026 Everyone agrees something went wrong. No one agrees on what the fix should be. Every response is being read as a moral signal. Fights of free speech versus public safety have only complimented fights of antisemitism and national security. This article looks through policy and focuses on credibility, hesitation, and pressure.…
